Monday kicks off on BBC2 8pm with Tigers about the House which follows zookeeper Giles Clark as he hand rears two Sumatran tiger cubs- Spot and Stripe. The cubs were born in Queensland zoo and are amongst the most endangered species in the world. To give them the best chance Clark takes the cubs home to live with his family and gives them round the clock care for their first four months. This three part series, narrated by Andrew Lincoln, shows the early development of the cubs as they struggle through their crucial first weeks.
BBC4 on Tuesday are showing the documentary The Girl Who Talked To Dolphins at 9pm. This follows the study in the 1960’s where Margaret Howe believed she was teaching a dolphin called Peter to speak English. In 1963 she helped turn a house into a domestic dolphinarium by flooding it with knee-deep water, where researchers could study the animals from their home.It was there she met Peter, an adolescent dolphin she described as ‘sexually coming of age’. As the two bonded, their relationship soon progressed to a more physical level. As Howe said: “Peter liked to be… with me. He would rub himself on my knee, my foot or my hand and I allowed that.
Howe claims this became a regular part of her studies, as she tried to teach Peter to speak English. She stated that it was sexual on his part – it was not sexual on hers :”… sensuous perhaps…It would just become part of what was going on like an itch, just get rid of that we’ll scratch and we would be done and move on. I was there to get to know Peter, that was part of Peter.”
But what started with Sixties idealism would spiral into the darkness of the decade. The experiment would end in tragedy, and for years after there would be rumors of the dolphins suffering drug abuse with LSD tests and scandal over the nature of Margaret’s relationship with Peter.
On Tuesday night, Horizon (BBC2 9pm) explore an almost forgotten news story: Where is Flight MH370? The Malaysia Airlines flight that disappeared between Kuala Lumpur and Beijing has still not been recovered and investigators talk about what they believe happened in this radar blind spot. It is hoped that with new technologies such as the black box streaming and enhanced air traffic surveillance that in the future no plane will go missing again.
