I took a break from our regular view of what’s what in movie land, as I had to visit the sick and lame last week. One thing I did learn though, was that you can’t trust critics who come bearing four stars for art house cinema! It’s a dangerous figure, four stars, and for foreign movies, it’s almost a catch all for anything that makes it to the cinema. Carancho was certainly the case, as it got positive reviews in all corners I could find, but this Argentine movie was as silly as anything Hollywood has produced in recent years, not for me I guess.
This weeks group seems pretty unimpressive, with Bel Ami, The Raven and John Carter taking a resounding beating from the critics. Can you trust them when they are negative, even if you can’t when they’re being positive? Who knows. The most disappointing one is the Raven, which I had hoped against hope would actually be good, but sadly, it doesn’t seem so.
