Yes, it’s Harry Potter Season again, so that will fill up most of the main stream cinemas. Still, two good movies this week, so we can’t really complain.
Uncle Boonmee who can recall his past lives is this year’s palm d’or winner, and gets five stars in the times and guardian. Need I go on? Is that not enough? Ok, here’s the down side, it’s from Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethaku and is about past lives and a fear of death. I think I’ll go regardless, as there’s too much fuss about it to miss it.
The other movie that does well is Chico and Rita, which is an animated movie. It gets four stars in the two rags, and is a story of the golden age of Jazz through the 40’s and 50’s. I’m sure I’ll end up at this one before too very long.
Harry Potter gets three or two stars off most of the papers, and hopefully I’ll see it in about four years after a very large christmas dinner, where I’ll think it was quite good, but it’ll probably be due to the wine!
UPDATE: I went to Chico and Rita, and was disappointed! The animation was very good (although there was a lot more use of computers than i was expecting!), but the story itself was pretty slight. Its worth seeing, but only just about.
