Shark School – Selachimorpha – Album Review

Shark School are an all-female band from Galway who kick up a mighty racket.  This is their debut album, Selachimorpha… which appears to be a type of shark?  Opening track Chondrichtyes (another aquatic reference) winds up dramatically to some grungy riffs as the band roars behind them before it goes into a fast-paced instrumental.  First song proper is Shark Song, taut riffing a bit like Dry Cleaning gone heavy, ‘talk-singing’ “I hate this place I hate this place” over glorious guitars.

There’s no let-up across the album. It’s A Sin has raucous vocals over glorious riffage, the brief Insomnolence is 58 seconds of sludgy riffs, while fellow instrumental Gnashing Teeth has molten metal guitars.  The fury of Don’t Trust A Man leaves little to the imagination over sledgehammer guitar chords.  5AM and When I See Her are fast-paced punky thrash numbers, with bawled lyrics over heavy riffs.
