Creepy Future – Thomas House – 17/04/26 – Live Review
by Killian Laher
Creepy Future held an album launch for their debut album, Brace Yourself, on a Friday night in the Thomas House in Dublin. Shrugging off the competition from across the street with Dry Cleaning (at Vicar Street), the small venue was sold out to an excited audience of punk fans. Support came in the shape of MANA, they played a set of heavy punk-influenced songs that battered you around the head. Their fearsome frontman took centre stage with growled, guttural vocals on a set of mostly new songs, vaguely reminiscent of Black Flag, ably backed by a very tight rhythm section.
Conzo (Michael Connerty), the mainman of Creepy Future, has been in a series of other bands over the years, Moutpiece and Afterwardness to name but two. Playing punk songs from the album at breakneck speed, they sounded a little like a mash-up of the Ramones with a bit of the Stooges thrown in. The impressive Everybody’s Wrong took the pace down a notch, well, half a notch, but they picked up the pace considerably for the rest of the set, where the speedy Mr Johnson and others powered along. While Conzo was the focus, Moose on bass and Derek Moutpiece on drums held it all together, prompting outbreaks of dancing and head-shaking in the delighted audience.
Very much old-fashioned, punk-inflected rock n roll, their music is fun, the songs are short and snappy, and are gone in a flash. The band played their songs with great energy and joy… to paraphrase an old punk: “they mean it maaan”. The album is available here: https://creepyfuture.bandcamp.com/album/brace-yourself
