Baghead – Film Review

Baghead – Film Review

Director – Alberto Corredor
Writers – Christina Pamies, Bryce McGuire, Lorcan Reilly
Stars – Freya Allan, Jeremy Irvine, Ruby Barker

When Iris (Freya Allan) receives a phone call to tell her that her estranged father (Peter Mullan) has died, she travels to Berlin to see the body. At the mortuary, she meets a mysterious solicitor (Ned Dennehy) who tells her she has inherited a pub called the Queen’s Head. Once there, she discovers she has inherited more than a building. In the basement of the pub, a creature dwells. It is known only as Baghead and has the unique ability to make the dead come back to life. As you might have guessed, this amazing ability does not come without consequences…

This is a full-length film based on the short Baghead (2017) by the same director; Alberto Corredor.  This new version is his debut feature. The cast are also relatively new names, with Peter Mullan being the only familiar face.

There are a number of unusual aspects to the film. One is that it is set in Berlin, a fact that is basically ignored as we meet almost exclusively English and Scottish people. They could have at least changed the pub’s name from the Queen’s Head to something more appropriate to the location. It may be something to do with the funding but it is curious, to say the least.

The main problem with the film is that it just isn’t that scary. The jump scares are few and far between and there is little else to keep you on edge. The story has a few holes in it, but despite this, it is an interesting premise and there are a few unexpected twists along the way. It’s not in the first tier of Horror films, but if you’re looking for something with a supernatural edge to keep you entertained, it should fill the spot.
