A Year in Music – 2023 – Scott Morgan (loscil)

A Year in Music – 2023 – Scott Morgan (loscil)
by Killian Laher

How are you? How are things?

I am OK thanks.  Some things are good, some are not so good.

Do you think it’s been a good year for music? What were your highlights?

Some very good music has helped us through a very rough year.   It’s been a painful stretch losing Ryuichi Sakamoto and Brian McBride, two phenomenal artists I consider mentors and friends.  I will cherish my memories of them both, and I’m grateful for the work they’ve left behind but it’s made this year a sad one.  Not to mention the state of our world.  It can be a downer.  But I’ve really enjoyed working with my friend Lawrence English, releasing an album and touring.  A bright spot in an otherwise dim year.

Music seems to be on an endless cycle of comebacks – with goth making something of a resurgence this year.  What do you think about that?

We live on a mountain of music from the past so it’s no surprise there is gold in there to dig up.  I haven’t noticed the resurgence of goth myself, but why not?

Anyone you’d like to see reform/return?

Labradford.

Were you happy with how your Colours of Air collaborative album with Lawrence English was received?

Yes, very happy.  The album and the live show seem to be resonating with folks.  It’s been a nice experience.  I don’t collaborate as often as I should.  We’re playing a bunch more shows in Europe in 2024 and will be finally releasing a vinyl edition so it’s nice the album and material is enjoying a bit of a journey.  Lawrence is a breeze to work with.

What’s next for you, are you working on any new music?

Some live dates planned for 2024 as mentioned – both with Lawrence and some solo shows in Australia.  I am working on new material.  It’s slow to take shape but I have some pieces of the puzzle in place.
