Loaded – The Life (and Afterlife) of The Velvet Underground – Dylan Jones – Book Review
by Killian Laher

Dylan Jones’ latest book is an account of the existence and impact of the Velvet Underground, from their formation right up to the death of Lou Reed and beyond.  The book is in the style of quotes from various talking heads, bound together with a narrative.  Jones has spoken to a wide variety of people, some who you might expect (John Cale, Nick Kent) and some who you might not (Siouxsie Sioux, Mick Jagger).

By no means focusing only on the Velvet Underground, the book is arguably at its most illuminating while covering the aftermath of the group and subsequent solo years of Reed and Cale, and also the wider scene.  There are many fresh anecdotes, some really depraved tales, little is left to the imagination, with Reed coming out particularly badly.  As ever, it’s hard to discuss the band without giving over a hefty chunk of the book to talking about Andy Warhol and Nico.

Very much a book for VU/ Reed geeks, it’s an essential read for the fans.  For others, it’s a good collection of yarns though it may not be the place to start.
