A Year in Music – 2022 – Scott Morgan (loscil)

A Year in Music – 2022 – Scott Morgan (loscil)

We asked some of our favourite artists/ writers to tell us about their year. You can see the results below…

How was music for you in 2022?

Generally positive.  Lots of great music being released and finally going to concerts again which almost feels normal.

What was your main musical highlight of 2022?

I went to the Yann Tiersen show with my youngest daughter.  Yann’s show was good but the highlight was sharing the event with my daughter and experiencing it through her ears and eyes.  For my own music, playing my first show after three years was definitely a highlight.  Such a pleasure and a privilege to play in front of a home town crowd at a beautiful venue like the Chan Centre here in Vancouver.

How do you feel about playing gigs?

Starting to feel OK about it again.  I went three full years without performing live. My first show back was nerve-racking for various reasons.  I’ve now played a couple shows recently and it’s starting to feel doable again.   I have a tour coming up in late February 2023 in Europe so that will be the next test.

Can you recommend an album, from any year, that doesn’t get the credit it deserves?

Well, I’m biased, but Kelly James Wyse Pastoralia – comes to mind.  Such a beautiful album of very thoughtful piano.  More people need to hear it.

Do you still listen to lots of music? How do you listen to music these days?

A fair amount.  My listening habits change depending on where I’m at with my own projects.  I don’t like to (or have time to) listen a lot when I’m deep into a project.  Mostly because my ears get tired. But generally, I do listen frequently.  Either in my studio, in the living room, in the car, or on headphones while travelling.  Mostly listening to Bandcamp downloads these days with some streaming in there as well.  The occasional CD, tape or record as well.

What sort of year have you had yourself?

Productive but at a very even pace.  I work on something every day but also don’t enjoy working feverishly anymore.  I like to take a slower approach and only take on a manageable amount of work.

Any interesting projects in the works? Are you working on a new album?

I have completed a collaborative album with Lawrence English.  Kranky will release this in early 2023. Lawrence recorded sounds on a pipe organ in Brisbane and sent them to me for manipulation.  I sent back some arrangements that he edited and mixed and we built a collection called Colours of Air.
