E.P. of Co-Aklan – Cathal Coughlan – Review

E.P. of Co-Aklan – Cathal Coughlan – Review
by Killian Laher

Cathal Coughlan follows up last year’s Songs of Co-Aklan with an EP of songs recorded around the same time.  It opens with the sinister-sounding Laszlo Plantagenet Loves The Sun, a track that’s every bit as strong as anything on last year’s album.  Tangerine is more brooding, with a sparse arrangement allowing Coughlan’s voice to take centre stage.  He really is in fine voice on this and the other songs here.  Crow Mother is reprised from the album as Crow Mother II.  Remixed by Kevin Sharkey, the new mix transforms the track from what was a stirring ballad to an almost Depeche Mode-like stomper.  The EP is rounded off by MindCloud, with shades of Tom Waits creeping into the instrumentation.  It’s available here.
