Album of the Week – 14/01/22

I say it with mild trepidation, but I think normal service has resumed? Yes, there are some good new releases this week, so hopefully, the lull of the Christmas/ New Year period is officially over.

This week we have new releases from Cat Power with her album called Covers, which features songs by Frank Ocean, Lana Del Rey, Nick Cave and more. Other releases of note include Elvis Costello & The Imposters (The Boy Named If), Earl Sweatshirt (SICK!), foxtails (fawn), Shiva Burlesque (Jeffrey Clark and Grant-Lee Phillips– Mercury Blues) and Daniel Blumberg & Josephine Foster (The World To Come). It’s a surprising number of new releases for early January.

In the end, we went for Bonobo with his new album Fragments. Simon Green aka Bonobo returns with his 7th studio album and his first since Migration in 2017. It’s another layered, complex affair that you’ll need time to explore. It’s well-deserving of your attention.

Album of the Week – Bonobo – Fragments

Bonobo has announced Fragments, a new album that will be released January 14, 2022 (Ninja Tune), along with a 2022 world tour. Along with the announcement, Bonobo has also shared the lead single “Rosewood.” Fragments is the most emotionally intense record that he – aka Simon Green – has ever had to make. It’s no surprise that it’s also his masterpiece. The album features Jamila Woods, Joji, Kadhja Bonet, Jordan Rakei, O’Flynn and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. Born first out of fragments of ideas and experimentation, the album ultimately was fused together in a burst of creativity fuelled by both collaboration and Green’s escape into the wild. The artwork for ‘Fragments” is by Neil Krug who returns after creating the art for 2017’s ‘Migration’.
