Album of the Week – 25/06/21

“This is a beautiful day
It is a new day
We are together!”

Yes, indeed, it is a beautiful day with lots and lots of lovely new releases. In fact, we’re spoiled for choice! We’ve got two albums we’ve reviewed this week in The Mountain Goats (Dark in Here) and Rose City Band (Earth Trip). There’s also a rather lovely release from Irish duo Saint Sister (Where I Should End). There’s even a new album of murky synth sounds from the bold John Grant (Boy From Michigan). Spoiled for choice really!

We went for some local talent (kinda) with Longford man John Murry taking the top prize this week.

Album of the Week – John Murry – The Stars Are God’s Bullet Holes

John Murry releases his new album The Stars Are God’s Bullet Holes, on June 25 via Submarine Cat Records. Lead single ‘Oscar Wilde (Came Here To Make Fun Of You)’ was accompanied by a video directed by actor / director Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones / Peaky Blinders / The Wire).

Mississippi-born Murry’s third album, The Stars Are God’s Bullet Holes was produced by John Parish (PJ Harvey, Eels, Aldous Harding, This Is the Kit) at Rockfield Studios in Monmouth.

The seriousness comes from the song’s opening: “I bought fertiliser and brake fluid / Who in the hell am I supposed to trust? / Sympathy ends in gas chambers / Oklahoma City shoulda been enough.” It’s one of the many moments on the record where violence – emotional or physical – rears up, but there’s a point to that. “The violence in the songs, it’s not to glorify it,” comments Murry. “Oklahoma City really should have been enough. These things are going on and on in the United States.”
