A Year in Music – 2020 – Jamie Cameron (The Last Dinosaur)

We asked some of our favourite artists/ musicians to tell us about their year. You can see the results below.

You can find out more about The Last Dinosaur here.

An extraordinary year in many ways.  How did it affect you specifically?

I think something akin to an emotional breakdown.  Thankfully, I feel pretty good at the moment.

Where did music fit in during 2020?  Does it seem important?

I might not be the best person to ask but; yes, definitely.  Always.  For better and for worse music remains the primary focus and interest for me.

What albums resonated this year?  Can be old or new.

K. Leimer’s A Figure of Loss.  Youth Pastoral by Ben Seretan.  What’s Tonight to Eternity by Cindy Lee.  Our Friends by Lila Tristram.  Fetch The Bolt Cutters by Fiona Apple.  Waking Hours by Photay.  Your Hero is Not Dead by Westerman.  Chunk by Felix M-B.  Figures by Aksak Maboul.  The forthcoming Fuzzy Lights album.  Incidentally, I just inherited my dad’s old hi-fi and speakers and the first things I’ve played have been Spirit of Eden and Colour of Spring by Talk Talk, Michigan by Sufjan Stevens, Insignificance by Jim O’Rourke, Ágætis Byrjun by Sigur Rós.

If you had to pick one album to sum up this year, what would it be?

It’s probably quite predictable but it would be Wholeness, for me.

How have you got through the last 7 or 8 months?

Hmmm, difficult question… not without a few scrapes and scuffles, certainly.  Ultimately I’d say that access to a studio space got me through.

Wholeness is an extraordinary album.  Where do you go from here?

Thank you for saying that.  Attempting to commit some of the backlog of songs to tape.  There’s maybe around 50 or 60.  I don’t actually know what I’m doing which means that I need a good engineer in order to get some of them right.

Any hopes for next year?

I’d love to see at least a couple of releases with my name on and also for there to be Wholeness vinyl ready before the first half of the year is up  (I’m still figuring it out…)
