Album of the Week – 06/11/20

It’s another slow-burning week, with a release from Heather Trost of A Hawk and A Hackshaw fame called Petrichor being one of the highlights. There’s also a couple of new (ish) releases from Neil Young (Neil Young Archives Volume 2 & Return to Greendale). If you’re a fan of Mister Herman Dune you’ll be excited to hear his album Notes From Vinegar Hill is released today!

There’s also a 35 year retrospective from the legend that is Perry Farrell (The Glitz; The Glamour) if you’re feeling nostalgic.

Some good Irish releases this week with Staring at Clocks by Bitch Falcon and Father, Brother, Son
by Oliver Cole. Both are worth checking out!

So, where does that leave us? Well, admiring the new release from a local man by the name of Seamus…

Album of the Week — Seamus Fogarty – A Bag of Eyes

It’s Seamus’ third album and it’s about time we started to sit up and pay attention. I’ve seen him play live in Whelans, the Workmans club and other venues on many occasions, so he’ll always have a special place in my heart. This album hasn’t broken the mould but it should generate plenty of attention for the Mayo man.

On November 6th, Seamus Fogarty will release his third album A Bag Of Eyes. Having previously shared “Johnny K”, today Fogarty unveils a second track from the record, “Jimmy Stewart”. Fogarty says of the track: “It’s me feeling like James Stewart in Rear Window, trapped in Walthamstow forever… months before lock down existed. It’s also me trying to write a 3-minute pop song. I recorded this live with Meilyr Jones, Pete Baker (Younghusband) & Euan Hinshelwood (Younghusband/Cate Le Bon).”

Additionally, Seamus Fogarty will be performing an online live show for Banquet Records on release day for those that pre-order the new album. The show will be his only performance with his band in 2020. For full details, head here.

A Bag Of Eyes is a wholly different sonic prospect to 2017’s much-lauded The Curious Hand. Weary of the guitar, and seeking something darker than its predecessor, he chose to lean more heavily on synths and drum machines, and additionally, to self-produce. “It was about creating and exploring new sound worlds,” Fogarty says. “Experimenting with new ways of incorporating electronics into the songwriting process, and in some cases dispensing with conventional songwriting processes altogether.”

There is industrial judder, slacker-fuzz guitar, a cacophony of saxophones. On one track, ring-modulated drums kick in with oscillating fury. Another moves from 90s’ shit-hole grunge venue to sleazy jazz joint in four minutes. Whilst on a third, a synth is deployed with the express purpose of sawing the listeners’ ears in half, Fogarty attests. However, beneath them lie fragments of melody, image, drone; a flicker of banjo, an electronic pulse. “I like to purposely make music that clashes with the more traditional stuff that I do,” he says.
