Album of the Week – 16/10/20

This week sees new releases from William Elliott Whitmore (With You) and Autechre (SIGN) and you couldn’t get two more different albums! We’d also recommend you give The Phoenix Foundation a listen, with their new album Friend Ship.

Damon Albarn returns and this time he’s wearing his Gorillaz hat! Their new album “Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez” is also released today.

Kevin Morby very nearly won this prestigious award with his new album Sundowner. You could argue that it’s not radically different from what has come before, but if it ain’t broke… why would Kevin dare to fix!

In the end, we went for the return of Ken Griffin and his band August Wells. Their new album sounds darker and quirkier than what went before with more than a hint of madness! There are some great lyrics also!

“I don’t know what came first
Being born or being broke
But when boys half your age
Make a thousand times your wage
It can all start to seem like a joke”

–  From the song: No More Operators

Album of the Week – August Wells – No More Operators

Ken Griffin’s baritone is the perfect delivery for lyrics that bring a poignant touch to the tragic from the opening lines ” The buildings weep their windows onto streets that cry their people, into lives that I don’t understand ” Joined on piano by John Rauchenberger, August Wells embraces the story of the individual and makes it speak universally writing music that speaks of the fragility of the human condition all the while grinning upwards through the street lights at the stars.

No More Operators embraces the shadowy out of the cracks ambience August Wells is known for. Songs about false prophets, real losses ,useless hope, crying leaves and young eyes in old faces. In a year deprived of live performance No More Operators creates a live immersive experience as phones ring, people chatter, and sets stutter to a start.

The music of August Wells has been described as “Strange other worldly chamber music”, “Sinatra singing Lou Reed songs” and “The secret marriage of Willy Nelson and Lee Hazlewood”. Songs to walk across your troubled heart with.
