According to Wikipedia, “Bardcore or tavernwave is a 2020 internet phenomenon consisting of medievalised remakes of pop music hit songs”. What could be easier! The musical arrangements include lutes, flutes and a variety of other era-appropriate instruments.
The Guardian dates the emergence of the genre to the 20th of April 20th this year, when Cornelius Link released a cover of the dance hit Astronomia which his new version Astronomia (Medieval Style).
One of the finest exponents of this new art form is the wonderfully named Hildegard von Blingin’who has an amazing 515K subscribers to her youtube channel! The name is a play on the name of Hildegard of Bingen, the 12th-century writer, composer, philosopher, Christian mystic, visionary, and polymath. So what does Miss Blingin’ do to match up with the original? Well, obviously covers of Gotye songs.
Or how about the classic Pumped up Kicks by Foster The People.
Whether the genre is here to stay or it’s simply a symptom of the ongoing madness of our times, we can only wait and see.
