Audi Dublin International Film Festival 2018Top Picks by Frank L.

The programme has been announced and can be seen at www.DIFF.ie

We’ve chosen five of interest from varying categories plus an opportunity to experience two silent movies with live music!

Wednesday 21st February: Black 47 and the reference is Ireland 1847 when Ireland was devastated by the famine caused by potato blight. It stars Hugo Weaving, Barry Keoghan and Jim Broadbent. Keoghan had a phenomenal 2017 with Dunkirk and the Killing of the Sacred Deer. It is expected that Black 47 keeps up the good work.

Thursday 22nd February – The Breadwinner directed by Nora Twomey. It has been nominated for an Oscar on 4th March 2018 in the Best Animated Feature Film category.

Monday 26th February – Madame directed by Amanda Sthers is a comedy starring Toni Colette, Harvey Keitel and Rossy de Palma which starts at a dinner party where the maid, in order to avoid 13 sitting down to the meal, at her employer’s request, becomes a Spanish aristocrat and joins the guests. There are consequences…

Thursday 1st March – Foxtrot – Director Samuel Maoz won the Venice Golden Lion with Lebanon (2009) “ a shrewd examination of bereavement and guilt”.

Saturday 3rd March The Meeting (2017) directed by Alan Gilsenan is based “on a real-life encounter between a rape victim and her attacker upon his release.”

Finally on Sunday 25th February there is a presentation of two “pre-talkie” movies: Behind the Door (1919 USA) which will be accompanied by a live piano and The Italian Straw Hat (1928 France) is accompanied by a quartet of instruments. A rare opportunity to experience a silent movie with live music.
