We’ve chosen five of interest from varying categories plus an opportunity to experience two silent movies with live music!
Wednesday 21st February: Black 47 and the reference is Ireland 1847 when Ireland was devastated by the famine caused by potato blight. It stars Hugo Weaving, Barry Keoghan and Jim Broadbent. Keoghan had a phenomenal 2017 with Dunkirk and the Killing of the Sacred Deer. It is expected that Black 47 keeps up the good work.
Thursday 22nd February – The Breadwinner directed by Nora Twomey. It has been nominated for an Oscar on 4th March 2018 in the Best Animated Feature Film category.
Monday 26th February – Madame directed by Amanda Sthers is a comedy starring Toni Colette, Harvey Keitel and Rossy de Palma which starts at a dinner party where the maid, in order to avoid 13 sitting down to the meal, at her employer’s request, becomes a Spanish aristocrat and joins the guests. There are consequences…
Thursday 1st March – Foxtrot – Director Samuel Maoz won the Venice Golden Lion with Lebanon (2009) “ a shrewd examination of bereavement and guilt”.
Saturday 3rd March The Meeting (2017) directed by Alan Gilsenan is based “on a real-life encounter between a rape victim and her attacker upon his release.”
Finally on Sunday 25th February there is a presentation of two “pre-talkie” movies: Behind the Door (1919 USA) which will be accompanied by a live piano and The Italian Straw Hat (1928 France) is accompanied by a quartet of instruments. A rare opportunity to experience a silent movie with live music.
