King Lear – Dramsoc UCD – Preview

King Lear – Dramsoc UCD – Preview by Audrey Devereux

“Speak what we feel, not what we ought to say” ― William Shakespeare, King Lear

Shakespeare speaks down through the ages and his words still ring true as we see the world’s political and social movers act out age old stereotypes in the public eye. King Lear explores very real issues that are as relevant today as they were when the play was first written; the nature of madness, the drive of the ego, the frailty of old age, the tension of family relationships, and the stark problem of homelessness.

Now in their 10th year of production, the Dramsoc Shakespeare plays have achieved much acclaim, both within UCD and beyond. Over the years the shows have had mentions on RTÉ Radio 1 and the Irish Times and the shows have won the prestigious ‘UCD Event of the Year’ award twice.

The Shakespeare shows give Leaving Certificate audiences the unique chance to experience the Shakespeare play performed by students not too far from their own age. It is also a chance to see upcoming theatre talent being directed by those who have gone on to forge a presence on the Irish theatre scene.

Dramsoc have selected King Lear, as their showcase production in this 10th year of Shakespeare plays, inviting UCD Dramsoc Alumna, Lisa Barry back to direct. Since her Dramsoc days, Lisa has gone on to study at the Lir, and has worked in theatre in a variety of capacities such as costume and stage management. She has worked on shows in The Peacock, The Project Arts Centre, and The Abbey. Her previous Dramsoc directing credits included Bedbound, which received several of nominations at the Irish Student Drama Festival in 2015.
