Folllow runs at the Abbey Theatre until Dec 6th.
Follow opened on the Peacock stage in the Abbey last Friday night but this is a production that has been around for a few years now. It was part of the 2011 Dublin Fringe Festival and won the ‘Spirit of the Fringe’ award in that year. It is a typical Wilfredd production, if there is such a thing. It is pieced together from a variety of stories of people in a similar situation, in that they are all deaf. The solo performer of the piece (Shane O’Reilly) is the son of deaf parents and as such grew up in the deaf community. It is his insight into the difficulties that deaf people face in the hearing world.
It is a story told through dance and music as the scenes change quickly from one to the next. Light is also an important presence in the work, and the strong lights from the side and above to create some impressive shadows. We get to see a variety of complex situations and all through the eyes and ears of those in the deaf community. The piece is held together by the warm and enthusiastic presence of O’Reilly on stage.
Folllow runs at the Abbey Theatre until Dec 6th.
