Lost Gems: The Caretaker – An Empty Bliss Beyond This World

The spookiest music I’ve heard in a long time, the Caretaker is the work of Leyland Kirby, who also records under the name of the Stranger and V/VM,.He is a 40 year old musician from Stockport in the United Kingdom.

His name comes from Kubrick’s The Shining (1980), in which Jack Torrance sees visions of the previous caretaker of the hotel. The music is reminiscent of the Ballroom scenes in Kubrick’s film and is inspired by music of the 1920’s and also memory loss. The piece below is from his 2011 album ‘An Empty Bliss Beyond This World’.

You can find out more about his music on his web site here.

You can find a full review of Kirby and his various guises on Astral Headspace here.

You can find a full discography of his work here.

He also works under the alias of V/VM, in which he’s generated some wonderful versions of classics, such as Chris De Burgh’s Lady in Red and Imagine.

His new version has breathed new life into the tired Chris De Burgh song…

There’s a free download of some of his VVM work here.
