If you see one movie this week… well, why limit yourself, really, see as many as you want, but Philomena is the one getting the plaudits. It seems to have gone done better with the Irish reviewers than elsewhere, but I guess it’s an Irish story. Judie Dench plays an Irish woman who had a child out of holy wedlock and was forced to give him up by the Magdelne laundries. Now, some 50 years later, she wants to meet up with him again. Metacritic is giving it an 82%, so all very positive.
But sometimes you really don’t want to watch a story about people’s plight against adversity, sometimes you just want to watch people beat each other up. Yes, Marvel are back with another minor character seeking the limelight, Thor: The Dark world was reviewed by us here. Our verdict ‘it’ll pass time nicely’. Glowing recommendation from the horse’s mouth. Metacritic give it a 58%
I think I think I like mumblecore movies more than I actually do, does that make sense? It’s the genre of movies with mixed production qualities that are generally about spoiled American young adults pouting. Well, there’s another one to add to the list with Joe Swanberg’s Drinking Buddies. I think you’re safe enough with this one though, it gets a 71% on Metacritic.
Shouldn’t The Haunting in Connecticut 2 really have come out last week? I mean, haven’t they missed the boat a little? It’s meant to be a bit crap anyway, and gets a pretty shocking 26% from the congealed mind of the critics.
Actually, the best rated movie this week is Cutie and the Boxer, a documentary about two Japanese artists living and working in America. I have to say I like the look of this one.
Short term 12 has won awards according to its trailer. Possibly another good one actually. Ok, it’s officially a good week. Troubled teens abound.
