Fans of Buffy, Angel, Firefly and Dollhouse (do they exist?) can stand jubilant as Joss Whedon is back with another TV series riding high after his triumphant blockbuster movie Avengers Assemble . The series is based on Marvel Comics fictional organization S.H.I.E.L.D or Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division.
Those who have been following the Marvel universe over the past few years with the big screen releases of Iron Man, Thor and Captain America will be familiar with a couple of the Agents Phil Coulson played by Clark Gregg (who has seemingly returned from the dead after Loki assassinated him) and Maria Hill played by Cobie Smulders. Hill’s character is only back for the pilot alas, which may break a few fanboy’s hearts.
The plot of the pilot episode revolves around S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson, after the events of The Avengers, assembling a small team of agents to investigate a mysterious group called the Rising Tide. In doing so, they encounter Mike Peterson an ordinary man who has acquired superhuman powers.
The pilot episode was previewed at this years San Diego Comic-Con to a positive reception. Whether or not that will translate to a good viewership outside the comic book fan arena we shall have to wait and see. It is being released on UK television just days after the US release so we will be keeping pace with viewers across the Atlantic.
I’m really looking forward to this as I have enjoyed all the movies thus far and think it should be a lot of fun. It starts on Channel 4 on Friday 27th September at 8pm.
