As we all know, Jazz is the devil’s music. Yes, after a long hard day torturing souls, there’s nothing the devil likes more than to sit in front of roaring fire, put the old hooves up, open a nice bottle of red wine and listen to some smooth Jazz.

“The programme for Down With Jazz festival include Irish blues luminaries, intriguing world music projects and funky young jazz acts.
JJ Smyth’s has a long-standing reputation as Dublin’s premier venue for jazz and blues music. As part of this year’s Down With Jazz we are presenting three favourite JJ’s acts. With a melodic, bluesy style of playing, popular guitarist Nigel Mooney and band will perform on Friday night. Saturday night blues come to Meeting House Square courtesy of Dublin guitarist Ed Deane, often in the service of blues royalty, from Shuggie Otis to Nick Lowe. Steeped in the delta sound of Son House, he brings us a flavour of his JJ Smyths resident band including some mighty oaks of the Irish blues scene. Curious guitarists can be found in Aungier St on the last Tuesday of every month for the Dublin Guitar Night. Brilliantly eclectic, reflecting everything from jazz and classical to rock and folk traditions, its hosted by Hugh Buckley, joined here by John Walsh, Pat Farrell and Darragh O’Neill for a diverse Down With Jazz one off guitar quartet.
In little over a year, the searing, quicksilver sax playing of Johannesburg born Chris Engel has become an indispensable sound on the Irish jazz scene. He’ll be in full flow with a hard grooving quintet on Friday. Contemporary world music group Yurodny also play on Friday night – highly acclaimed for their unique, and multi-textured “music sans frontieres”. Also on Friday one of the leading guitarists in European jazz, Mike Nielsen’s group Ripe For Rebels features Greg Felton (piano), Derek Whyte (bass) and James Macken (drums).
Saturday night at Down With Jazz starts smoothly with Dublin singer Cormac Kenevey and his perceptive interpretions of the jazz classics, from the lovingly caressed ballad to the up tempo stomper. Neo-soul collective BUTTER’s repertoire of soul and hip hop improv has made for excellent live shows in the last year, including support slots to some high profile artists such as Haitus Kaiyote. The Multiverse are a trio that utilize the classic drum/bass/guitar combo, twelve equal temperament notes and the human mind, to create an electrifying sound full of passion. World music is brought to the fore with a return of the excellent Khanda project – a cross cultural collaboration between Ireland and India with top musicians such as Sarah Buechi, Ramesh Shotham, Peter Browne, Tommy Halferty and Ronan Guilfoyle performing on Sunday.
A family friendly affair, with children under 12 admitted for free, Sunday at Down With Jazz begins at 2pm with the intriguing sound of the UCD Gamelan. The first gamelan orchestra in Dublin, they perform both traditional Javanese music and original compositions. Gamelan is the ancient classical music of Indonesia, with a history stretching back almost a thousand years. Also on Sunday No Crows play a unique blend of Irish traditional, Gypsy, Jazz, Classical and World music with a repertoire ranging from Portugal to Moldova, from Venezuela to Greece and beyond. Some Sabbath day funk will be in the guise of Cork trombonist Paul Dunlea and band. And expect a sensory assault of sparkle, soul and good vibes, as up to 18 members of the Sun Ra inspired cosmic funk troupe OuterSpaceways Inc. will be landing from Saturn on the Sunday to blow your mind before nightfall.”
The story of the anti-jazz campaigns of 1930’s Ireland grabbed imaginations for the inaugural festival in August 2012, with crowds of over 1,500 descending on the Square for Down With Jazz. This September we continue to celebrate this “music borrowed from the savages of Africa by the anti-God society” (Father Peter Conefrey, Leitrim, 1934) vying for attention against the more wholesome All Ireland Hurling Final on the 8th September. We say Jazz for the win!
