You probably already know if you’re going to like Moonrise Kingdom. Wes Anderson is one of those directors where you know what you’re going to get. Still, he’s just about the only director that Bill Murray will work for these days, so that in itself is reason enough to go. I wonder could they get him to direct Ghostbusters 3? Hmm. Anyway, his new one is widely regarded as his best since the Royal Tens, so definitely worth a look.
Otherwise, it’s a slow week. Men In Black 3 is out, and I have to say that the rest of the series is pretty good, as kid’s sci fi goes. Otherwise, there’s a few art house ones in She Monkeys, Free Men and Barbaric Genius (all sound a little average) and some trash in ‘What to expect when you’re expecting’.
A special word for the lighthouse which is showing ‘Awesome: I shot that’ directed by the late, great Adam Yauch tomorrow at 10.50 (late show).
Also, they continue to show the sleeper hit of the year, in ‘Bill Cunningham: New York’, a documentary on the quite wonderful fashion photographer, who takes photos of the quirkly residents of New York, and at 83, has been doing so for over 40 years. It’s a sweet story of a man who loves what he does, and doesn’t worry about the monetary side of life. A fascinating man, and well worth a visit.
