With the recent New Multitudes record coming out (Jay Farrar and co.) and mining the writings of Woody Guthrie, it reminded me of another lovely set of songs based on Woody’s words, Mermaid Avenue, released in 1998. This time it was Billy Bragg & Wilco tackling it and to be honest, I couldn’t think of a better partnership to honour the great man. Bragg is often seen as a sort of heir to Guthrie and Jeff Tweedy of Wilco has a voice made for this material. Below are two very different (and brilliant) tracks. The first is the political yet beautiful/sad Eisler on the Go sung by Bragg and the second is the upbeat/uplifting California Stars sung by Tweedy. You could listen to these two tracks on a loop all day for a perfect musical fix.
