Simon Nabatov is a Russian Jazz pianist, he started playing piano at 3 and composed his first pieces at age 6. He was named keyboard magazine’s ‘best pianist’ in 1984 and certainly is worth checking out, if you’ve been tempted by Jazz in the past (I know, it’s a dangerous road).
I’ve seen him a few times live, and I think it may be best heard that way. His compositions feel free form, but often revert to a central core and give it enough structure so as not to feel too meandering. Here’s a taste of what he sounds like, for those that don’t know him.
He has worked with ‘prepared piano’ much as Hauschka in our post last week. I can only find this segment on youtube, as once more the internet has let me down!
