Looking back over their career, with Blood Simple now being 27 years old, its pretty fair to say Coen bothers hardly put a foot wrong! There are a few on the list that are a little less than perfect, with ‘Burn after Reading’ and ‘The Ladykillers’ being average at best, but there’s very few that I can say I didn’t enjoy. They’ve always reminded me of Billy Wilder, in style and also the ability to move from one genre to the next with ease. In truth they owe him a lot, but if you are going to copy someone, copy the best!
2009 A Serious Man
2008 Burn After Reading
2007 No Country for Old Men
2004 The Ladykillers
2003 Intolerable Cruelty
2001 The Man Who Wasn’t There
2000 O Brother, Where Art Thou?
1998 The Big Lebowski
1996 Fargo
1994 The Hudsucker Proxy
1991 Barton Fink
1990 Miller’s Crossing
1987 Raising Arizona
1984 Blood Simple
Their latest effort is an adaptation of the book True Grit, but is said to owe little to the John Wayne movie of the same name. The reviews seem uniformly positive with all four or five stars, so I’ll head along this weekend!
Otherwise, ‘Never let me go’ is an adaptation of a Kazuo Ishiguro novel that gets average reviews, and ‘Paul’ a Simon Pegg and Nick Frost movie that the English press don’t seem to like, which is a little surprising. ‘Just go with it’ and ‘Gnomeo and Juliet’ sound like they’re best avoided!
