So much has been said already about Neutral Milk Hotel’s 1998 album, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, and it seems that the fascination with Jeff Mangum will continue forever. This is partly due of course to his elusiveness and the fact that their last record (only their second) was released 12 years ago. At the height of their critical acclaim after the release of Aeroplane they pulled the plug (including turning down a support slot for REM). A couple of days ago Jeff Mangum played an unannounced show in Brooklyn so it seemed like as good a time as any to play some of his songs again.

Not sure where you stand on them youself, but I’m not a huge fan. That album always ends up in ‘top ten indie albums of all time’ lists, which i think is a bit excessive.
Having said that, i only heard it for the first time a few years ago, so maybe i’d just heard the people that ripped them off before hearing it, which is always a difficult way to come to something.
Yeah i hear ya. I do like the songs alot, but in saying that, I don’t listen to the album much at all. Not sure if that makes sense. I suppose what I’m saying is that when I do listen to them I am always struck by how good they are really… hmm
