Avey Tare

I’ve no strong emotions on Animal Collective. I think they’re grand, and for that reason, and that reason only, it surprises me when people (ok, I mean pitchfork) get so hot and bothered about them! Their sound is meant to be ground breaking and something completely different, but I’d have to say I think it sounds a lot like early Mercury Rev, when they were at their best, as in.

Avey Tare is one quarter of Animal Collective according to Wikipedia. He’s just about to release a solo album, and you can hear a track from it here, which is also available for download. I’m also going to include an early Mercury Rev track, as I’m being an old grouch today. They don’t make music like that anymore…

  1. You’re not a grump at all! That’s how I felt when I heard Gold Soundz by Pavement last week. Funnily enough, it’s not just “they” that don’t make music like this anymore, Mercury Rev themselves don’t make music like this anymore sadly. Bring back David Baker… (although I do like “See you on the other side” which was Baker-less I think) – but after that its a slippery slope!

    • Yeah, well, there’s loads of great modern bands, but would have to say Animal Collective aren’t one of them. They’re grand, nothing more. Rubbish live too, I’ve seen them twice and left both times wondering what the fuss was all about.

Animal Collective just make ‘wall of sound’ indie rock, and there’s a lot of people who have done this before them.

Baker was a genius alright. I really like his Shady album too. Pity he didn’t make more of them! He’s a producer now i think.
