Is Nostalgia a good thing? A yearning for the past, often in an idealized form. I’m not sure it is, but it certainly sells tickets for concerts.
When asked how to have a sell out tour, one music insider said you should have a hit single in 1987! You’d have to agree with him, considering the amount of tickets Prince, Bruce Springsteen and many others sell on the average year. It isn’t confined to mainstream music either, as the headliners in all the big festivals in the last couple of years have been the Pixies, My Bloody Valentine and a few other bands, that haven’t even released a record in the last 15 years.
Having said all that, I’ll relax my stance for the few Irish bands that are getting with the nostalgia scene. The Sultans of Ping FC, the Power of Dreams and the Frank and Walters are having a night in the Academy on the 23rd of December. Tickets are on sale for a slightly steep 27.50 euro. I’ll let you make your own mind up on it!
Now, how could I resist! Where’s me jumper from 1992, ah yes, I remember it well, on the beatbox on a Sunday morning. Sigh…
