Softcult – Heaven EP – Review
by Killian Laher
Canadian twins Phoenix and Mercedes Arn-Horn, who go by the name of Softcult, are gaining attention west of the Atlantic with their gauzy shoegazey sound. Though yet to release an album, this is their latest EP. It starts with the woozy Haunt You Still which will appeal to fans of Slowdive, sounding straightforward on an initial listen but with a washed-out sound.
One of the Pack and Shortest Fuse are grungier, channelling a 90s alt-rock sound. Spiralling takes that 90s influence and a gauzy sound in a poppier direction while the dreamy 9 Circles and the title track distil a yearning, longing feeling into four-minute pop songs.
Although you could be forgiven for thinking you’ve heard all this before, the twins do this sort of thing very well and the EP is an enjoyable listen.
