Veyls – The Widow EP – Review

Veyls – The Widow EP – Review
by Killian Laher

Veyls is a new band consisting of Culley Johnson, Coco Medvitz and Louise Post of Veruca Salt.  It’s something of a surprise to hear Post involved in a new project, barely six months on from her debut solo album, an album of disparate styles that tried hard but just missed the mark.

The EP starts with gnarly guitars and a beefy, rocky sound on Lazy River, married to a catchy, upbeat melody.  It’s followed up by the twitchy, nervous rock of Life Support featuring a tightly wound guitar solo midway through.  The title track is the undoubted highlight.  This one aims for the exact midpoint of Fleetwood Mac and Garbage, with brooding guitars, haunting vocals from Post and a killer chorus: “What’s said is said, done is done, burn the hills and wait for water”.  The final track Blue Lightning has an acoustic, yearning feel which builds up slowly to something of an anthem.  If this EP is anything to go by, a full-length album will be worth listening out for.
