It will surprise many that you are a self-taught musician. Did you ever take any music lessons?
I had some very early easy-going piano lessons, but most of what I know I have just learned on my own. I have always been a person who learns more from action than studying, so it works for me.
When did you first fall in love with the piano?
I was pretty young, probably 6 when I first heard Chopin and Beethoven’s piano pieces and felt really drawn to the piano
You are heavily involved with writing scores for films in recent years. Did you always enjoy movies as a child growing up?
Films and film music have always had a strong impact on me from an early age. My mother took me to see a lot of silent films when I was young so I had a lot of exposure to the whole history of film.
What are your favourite movies?
There are too many to list- but some of my favourite directors are Kubrick, Tarkovsky, Sofia Coppola, Kar-Wai Wong, Jane Campion.
You are playing Liberty Hall in Dublin later this month. Do you enjoy touring?
I love coming to Ireland and always feel a strong connection to the people there. I am an O’Halloran so it must be in my DNA. I like touring if it’s not too much, but since the pandemic and everything slowed down I have really enjoyed getting back to the live experience. It’s something that just can’t be replicated.
Do you get to see much of each location or is it mostly travel and hotel rooms?
Yeah, it’s not really a tourist visit so you don’t get to see much. Sometimes we are lucky to have a day off and get to see some things. But usually trying to get enough sleep and feeling prepared to perform.
What films did you particularly like working on?
Some of my favourite films I have worked on are LION and AMMONITE, I think both had a really deep emotional resonance for me.
