Album of the Week – 05-03-21

In the last few weeks, this slot has been very obvious indeed, but it’s very hard to ignore new albums from bands/ artists like Nick Cave, Tindersticks and the like. So, yeah, it’s basically the same this week with the return of Arab Strap after about a hundred years in the wilderness. We love what they do, so they were always going to get the top slot and certainly with an album of this quality.

Otherwise, we suggest you check out the new releases from Andrew Bird and Jimbo Mathus (These 13), Jay Gonzalez (Back to the Hive) and Visionist (A Call To Arms). The Best of the Irish is probably Edel Meade with her new album Brigids and Patricias! You can hear them below in our ‘Albums of Note’ Section.

Album of the Week— Arab Strap – As Days Get Dark

“Arab Strap are back and yes, they’re probably still a bit too scary for the casual listener. But these are as strong a set of songs as they have done, sounding as vital as ever. Welcome back, lads.” – Killian Laher from our review which you can find here.

“It’s about hopelessness and darkness,” says Aidan Moffat. “But in a fun way.” The Arab Strap frontman is speaking about the band’s 7th studio album and their first since 2005’s The Last Romance. Despite them being a pinnacle group of the era, Moffat makes it clear that the aim is not to “recapture the 90s” but instead to create a distinctly new album, with new tools, sounds and a forward moving sense of exploration. “This album feels like its own new thing to me,” he says. “It’s definitely Arab Strap, but an older and wiser one, and quite probably a better one.”

“We’ve had enough distance from our earlier work to reappraise and dissect the good and bad elements of what we did,” says Middleton. “Not many bands get to do this, so it’s great to split up.” Whilst Moffat jokingly says “we’re still doing what we always do: Malcolm gives me some guitar parts then I’ll fuck about with them and put some drum machines and words over the top”.
