Beach Slang / Quiet Slang – We Were Babies & We Were Dirtbags – Review by Killian Laher

After two very enjoyable albums of what used to be known in the States as ‘college rock’, Beach Slang have gone down a more low-key route.  Retitling as ‘Quiet Slang’, Alex James and co replace their heavy guitars with piano and cello with somewhat underwhelming results.  The intensity is a little drained out of Future Mix Tape for the Art Kids and Bad Art & Weirdo Ideas, leaving them sounding, almost a little on the ‘cringe’ side of Bruce Springsteen.  The two covers, The Replacements’ Androgynous and Big Star’s Thirteen come across as glorified karaoke exercises.  Rumour is they’re planning a whole album of this.  Will you tell them or will I?

Track List –

1. Future Mix Tape for the Art Kids
