Killian Laher on Music in 2017

Well it will take a lot to live up to 2016, though not necessarily for the right reasons.  Here are some of the musical highlights we can expect:

Brian Eno is releasing his latest ambient opus on the 1st of January in the shape of Reflection, which promises to emulate classics such as Thursday Afternoon. Mark Eitzel‘s album Hey Mr Ferryman now has the release date of Jan 27th plus he has shared The Last Ten Years: which sounds like familiar territory for him.  Max Richter is releasing Three Worlds: Music from Woolf Works, the soundtrack to a Wayne McGregor ballet inspired by the writing of Virginia Woolf, on January 27.

Ryan Adams will release an 80s inspired album, Prisoner on February 17th.  With ELO mentioned as one of the influences, you’d best steel yourself for this one but the internet has been fawning over the first taste Do You Still Love Me
However ‘To Be Without You’ sounds more impressive.
Mark Kozelek can’t go very long with releasing something these days and 2017 promises to be no different, with a Sun Kil Moon double album due out Feb 28th Common As Light and Love Are Red Valleys of Blood from which he has shared God Bless Ohio: http://www.sunkilmoon.com/godblessohio/ .  He is also due to release another album with Jesu on 1st June, 30 Seconds To The Decline of Planet Earth.
Away from planet Koz, the Eric Pulido (Midlake) supergroup BNQT are due to release an album in March, also due is the first album for 19 years from the Jesus and Mary Chain, Damage and Joy, is due for release on March 24th which good or bad cannot be ignored.  Based on Amputation it sounds like little has changed in their world.
Thurston Moore has been talking about an album Rock ‘n’ Roll Consciousness for a while now.  Recorded with his band which includes Debbie Googe of MBV, it looks like it might surface in April.  The industrious Dakota Suite will release The Indestructibility of the Already Felled, an ambient record made with Dag Rosenqvist and Quentin Sirjacq.  Also The Savings and Loan may release a second album in 2017, Receiver of Wreck.  Looks like a quiet year so far.
