Previews from Thursday 17th November / Opening Night Wednesday 23rd November
The Gate Theatre is delighted to present The Heiress by Ruth and Augustus Goetz, from November 17th 2016 until January 2017.
Adapted from the novel Washington Square by Henry James, The Heiress explores the life of the wealthy Sloper family, living in an opulent house in 1850’s New York City. Catherine Sloper, daughter of a protective widowed surgeon, lacks both social graces and beauty, unlike her deceased mother. Catherine falls in love with handsome Morris Townsend, the first man to ever give her attention. She believes her love is reciprocated but Dr Sloper is doubtful, believing Morris is only interested in the family inheritance.
Accomplished in the world of theatre, David Grindley is a world-renowned Director, directing productions such as Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and The Gigli Concert in the Gate Theatre.
Actor Denis Conway plays Dr Sloper in this production, following his previous outstanding appearances at the Gate Theatre, which includes George in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, which is returning next to the Gate stage. Denis is a well-known face having appeared in TV3’s Trial of the Century as well as recently directing a new play at the New Theatre Temple Bar.
With roles on RTE’s Fair City, and BBC’s The Fall, we are delighted to welcome Tara Egan Langley back to the Gate Theatre’s stage, following her roles in A Christmas Carol and most recently The Constant Wife. Tara will play Mrs Montgomery in this production. We are also delighted to welcome back Marion O’Dwyer to the Gate to play Mrs Lavina Penniman. Marion has appeared in many Gate productions including The Importance of Being Earnest, An Ideal Husband and A Streetcar Named Desire.
