Day Wave

Day Wave is coming to the Workman’s Club May 16th to make his Irish debut. We had the chance to catch up with him ahead of his visit to our fair shores.

“Day Wave is an American indie rock band from Oakland, California, formed in 2015. The band consists solely of Jackson Phillips, with accompanying musicians for live performances. The band released their debut EP Head Case in 2015.”

What music were listening to as a teenager and do you think it influenced your present sound?

Yeah I definitely think it is an influence. I liked bands like Pink Floyd, Interpol, King Crimson, Brian Eno, Don Caballero and Yes.

In your youth, you were interested in becoming a Jazz drummer. What made you reject that scene in favour of alt rock?

I always loved rock and pop music, and I wanted to go back to these styles with Day Wave. It reminds me of being a kid.

When did you start playing other instruments? Did you play all the instruments on your latest EP?

I picked up piano when I was 19, and started singing when I was 22. I didn’t start playing guitar and bass until I was 24. Yeah, I play everything on the Day Wave recordings.

What is the reason for not using your own name for the music, is it about why people’s expectations?

I think I wanted Day Wave to be perceived as a band or project, not just a person.

Is there an album on the way?

There is. I’m not sure when it’ll be ready, but it’s in the works.

How many people are in the band for the live show?

There are 5 of us.

Henry – bass

Kevin – guitar

Me (Jackson) – guitar and vox

Jack – Synth

Nick – drums

Are you worried about the rise of Donald Trump?

I am, but I’m pretty sure he won’t get elected. I hope.
