Ok, so technically it’s not Bewleys, but it’s only up the road! Bewley’s Cafe Theatre will move the short journey up Johnson’s Court (that little side lane) to Powerscourt Townhouse Centre. Everything else will be as before, and most importantly, there will still be soup! The move happens on Feb 16th and will last the duration of the refurbishments.
Full details on press release below.
Bewley’s Cafe Theatre is happy to announce that it will be taking up residency at the Powerscourt Theatre on the top floor of the Powerscourt Townhouse Centre from February 16th, 2015 (for the duration of the renovations at Bewley’s Cafe). Lunch will be available as usual, provided by the wonderful Pepper Pot Café of the Powerscourt Townhouse Centre.
Lunchtime Theatre will continue every Monday-Saturday at 1pm, with the usual high standard, quality productions which in the next few months sees us welcome the likes of Peter Sheridan, Phelim Drew, Karl Shiels and Noni Stapleton to our stage.
We are delighted to have found an alternative theatre so close to our original location and one so ideally suited to maintaining the ambience and intimacy for which the Cafe Theatre is famed. David Horan, Artistic Director of Bewley’s Cafe Theatre, says,
‘I had been interested in collaborating with this beautiful new venue ever since my first visit to the Powerscourt Theatre last Summer. At just 115 paces from our original location, and with more than double the capacity of our own venue, Bewley’s Cafe Lunchtime Theatre at Powerscourt makes sense in every way: artistically, commercially and operationally. We hope that our large and loyal audience will come with us on this new venture and are sure they’ll be well-served by the move. We are delighted too that this is also a collaboration that works for all the theatre artists who have strong ties with Bewleys Cafe Theatre and its audiences.’
In recent years, Bewley’s Cafe Theatre has become a vital part of Dublin and Ireland’s Theatre scene, presenting year-round lunchtime theatre offerings as well as plat-forming new writing, new adaptations and the very successful Show in a Bag initiative by Fishamble and the Irish Theatre Institute, which creates shows that tour throughout the country and abroad. The move to the Powerscourt Theatre will allow Bewley’s Cafe Theatre to continue to develop this exciting new work and also represents an opportunity to innovate and grow. The Cafe Theatre’s exemplary relationship with the Campbell-Bewley’s Group will continue and renovations to the main building will also include the theatre which will be refurbished along with the rest of the Cafe.
