From early January, Bastille day seems a long way away, but New York singer Hayley Coupon will make the intervening months drift away! A delicate voice layered over gentle piano music that boils up into something quite tender and lovely. Hayley Coupon’s new EP, Do The Right Thing, Like You Said You Would.

Hayley Coupon is a self-taught New York-based singer and pianist who writes songs that bridge the seemingly impassable divide between vocals-driven pop and acoustic, lyrically lush rock. After writing her first few songs in the spring of 2012, Coupon spent the next year collaborating closely with friends to record her debut EP, Remembrance. Richly, yet sparingly orchestrated, nostalgic, and poignantly performed, Remembrance is grounded in Coupon’s rhythmic piano and expressive vocals. With influences as disparate as Joni Mitchell and Radiohead, or Leonard Cohen and Jon Brion, Coupon reclaims and updates the spirit and tradition of the singer-songwriter art form in its confessional compositions and personal imagery.
Upon the release of Remembrance, Pigeons and Planes said that “her voice has a unique tone that sets Coupon apart from her singer-songwriter contemporaries and places her in a category all her own.”

Among Coupon’s first releases was her well-received cover of Tame Impala’s “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards,” which IndieShuffle reviewed, stating that “with just an acoustic guitar, banjo, and upright bass [Coupon’s] soulful swooning croon crafts a gentle dulcet tone to the longing tune.”
