Young Fathers – Dead – Album Review

Young-Fathers

This something out of left field, an unexpected sound that has caught my imagination over the last few weeks. You can tell the roots of their sound, with Massive Attack and other trip hop bands coming to mind, but there’s something new and brash about what they do, with loud electronic sounds and heavy drums scarred across everything they do. This is no backing track for the rappers to show off their skills, this is a full sound and it is bound to get much attention over the coming months.

‘I got a sliver of insight, from Vladimar’s wind pipe and a hand written invite’ – Mmmh Mmmh

Young Fathers are a hip-hop trio from Edinburgh, Scotland which will come as a surprise when you hear their sound. It’s not something that you would associate with that far north. Regardless of their geography, they’re worthy of your attention. There are some lovely percussion sounds, that form the basis of each track. Sometimes they sound like the beat of an attacking tribe, sometimes like a brass band, but all rumble with an eerie precision, layered and tumbling.

While their sound may be too vulgar or raw to be find a home in many a record collection, for those willing to take a risk, this comes recommended for its bravery and diversity. What they do doesn’t always work out, but when it does, it’s really quite special. Stand out tracks include the singles ‘Get Up’ and ‘Low’ both of which you can hear below.

Young Fathers – Dead is available from Ninja Tunes.
