Culture Night 2013 – 20th Sept – Music Highlights

Well, Culture Night is less than a month away, so lets have a look at what’s in store around the country. Some of the events are ticketed, so if you’re interested, check out all the events on the Culture night web site here.  As ever, nearly everything is free, so well worth checking out.

Dublin

Casino Marino – Dublin – A unique performance ‘Casino by Candlelight’ with Pat Coldrick, Classical Guitarist & Composer. Three Music Recitals commence at: 17:30pm (Outdoors); 19:30pm (State Room); 20:45pm (Blue Saloon). Places limited & booking essential.

Contemporary Music Centre – Dublin – Experience truly live compositions by Irish composers at Ireland’s Centre for Contemporary Music. Curated by composer Karen Power, each piece of music unfolds throughout Culture Night culminating in live performances in the Centre and involving urban spaces around Temple Bar. 5 – 10pm

RTÉ Concert Orchestra in Meeting House Square – Dublin – The RTÉ Concert Orchestra will perform an exclusive outdoor concert on Culture Night. Featuring old classics, the free orchestral performance will be broadcast live on RTÉ 1 Arena. The concert will also feature a specially commissioned work in celebration of Culture Night which has been written by contemporary Irish composer Stephen Gardener.

Ranelagh Arts LTD – Dublin – After the stunning success of their 10 Days in Dublin showcase, the ladies behind Bare Hands Poetry and The Ash Sessions come together again to host another ‘Baring Our Ashes’ Poetry and Music Cabaret at the Ranelagh Market. – 10pm – 12am

Armagh

Hanna Sisters – Armagh – The Maghery-based ‘Hanna Sisters’ are seasoned performers having toured Ireland, the UK and Europe extensively. Their music comprises an eclectic mix of traditional, contemporary folk and pop. All accomplished musicians; they blend together their own unique vocal harmonies and haunting violin and whistle playing into an uplifting night’s entertainment. The event will take place in Market Place Theatre main auditorium. 9pm.

Cork

RTÉ Van Burgh Quartet – Cork County – The RTÉ Van Burgh Quartet will perform a special concert in St. Multose Church, Kinsale for Culture Night 2013. The RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet has consistently championed the work of Irish composers in concerts and broadcasts in Ireland and abroad, and features the talents of Gregory Ellis, Keith Pascoe, Simon Aspell, and Christopher Marwood.

Sounds from the Underground at the Pavilion- Cork – The Pavilion presents Sounds from the Underground a collection of Cork based acts covering everything from alternative to electronic dubstep. Featuring Grave Lanterns, Prof Ruff Chuff, Rory Francis O’Brien and more.

Kildare

Fresh Ré – Kildare – Fresh Ré is a young five-piece band from Celbridge, who got together after two of their members went viral. Robert Scanlon and Harrison Dhodo covered Rihanna’s ‘We Found Love’ which was viewed by millions on YouTube. Fresh Ré have appeared on The Late Late Show and Operation Transformation. Having expanded their repertoire, they are currently working on original material in the studio and will perform an exclusive set in Celbridge Library. Suitable for young adults upwards but booking is essential. 7pm.

Music From The Movies – Kildare – The Liffey Valley Orchestra and the Orchard Home and Garden centre invite you to a prom-style concert with ‘Music from the Movies’. Pieces will include, The Dambusters, The Great Escape, Colonel Bogey, Bridge on the River Kwai, American Patrol, Overture from The Sound of Music and many more favourites. Established in 1991, The Liffey Valley Orchestra caters for players of all ages and musical ability. The Orchard Home and Garden, established in 1987, is currently the Bord Bia Garden Centre of the Year. 7pm-8pm.

Kilkenny

The Midnight Union Band – Kilkenny – Kilkenny’s own, The Midnight Union Band, will perform on Culture Night in the city. Currently doing the rounds in the Irish gigging circuit, with their heartfelt and energetic live performances soliciting rave reviews throughout the country from fans and critics alike, this is surely an Irish band to watch out for and a real treat for Kilkenny audiences on Culture Night. With each member of the band bringing diverse influences, it is difficult to categorise MUB’s sound. Ostensibly they may be described as a unique blend of Americana, Folk, Rhythm and Roots, infused with an alt-country twist.

Limerick

Tongue Bundle at Limerick City Gallery of Art – Limerick – The city’s art gallery will host a live performance from the jazz and funk band, Tongue Bundle. As well as a rocking performance, the gallery will also have children’s art workshops, as well as the unveiling of a large collage created by those who participated in last year’s Culture Night events at the gallery.

Music Generation Limerick City – Limerick – Music Generation Limerick City will be launching in the city on Culture Night. Various city venues will showcase the work of Music Generation with musicians, choirs and ensemble performances. Music Generation is Ireland’s newest national music education programme. Initiated by Music Network and funded by U2 and The Ireland Funds, Music Generation aims to help children and young people to access music education in their own locality. It is a five-year programme (2010 – 2015), which is locally provided within a national framework.

Carlow

TBA Pop-Up – Carlow – TBA Pop-Up is a brand new take on a very old space. A converted 17th Century Coaching Inn at 59 Dublin Street, Carlow will be the location of folk, blues and Jazz music in the surroundings of a 1920’s speakeasy. A password gains entry into the world of prohibition-era glamour and good times. Flappers only.Culture Night 2013
