Byzantium is Neil Jordan’s latest step into the world of the super natural, it stars Gemma Arterton, Saoirse Ronan and Sam Riley and is a tale of vampires! Ok, I’m not sure I could watch another vamprire movie at the moment, but possibly for Neil!
I saw Neil Jordan in conversation with Pat McCabe last Saturday in a free event in the IFI, and he’s actually a really nice guy despite the stories I’ve heard over the years about him being difficult! The things I learned at this talk include:
– Casting is the most difficult bit, but if you get it right, you don’t have to do any work as a director.
– Editing is where the fun is.
Just in case I ever direct a movie, I’ll keep them in mind!
We also heard many movie tales and how Neil made it from a writer into the world of film, but that’s a story for another day.
The Purge is an unusual tale of a single night in the year where all crime is legal. Ethan Hawke stars, and I’ve always quite liked him. The reviews are pretty average but it’s an interesting idea, and Ethan is something of an enigma, so up to you.
The Big Wedding is Bob De Niro in funny mode again. Diane Keaton and Susan Sarandon also star in a movie that gets 1 and 2 star reviews in most places. Best not mentioned again then!
Populaire is a french comedy about a young woman is a typing competition! Average reviews sadly, but it looks like it could be fun.
