Lots of movies this week, and even a few good ones thrown in there, which is always welcome!
Side Effects is supposedly Steven Sodebergh’s last ever movie. He’s announced it and no one seems to think he’s kidding. I’d say he’ll be back! He has quite an impressive back catalogue, but more than a few klangers in there also. If it is his last, this is probably a good way to sign off, as it’s getting praise in most directions and should be worth checking out.
It stars Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum, Jude Law, where Jude is psychiatrist treating a young woman, and prescribes here a drug that has… you guessed it… unexpected side effects!
Broken is the movie that opened this years JDIFF and Cillian Murphy, Tim Roth and Rory Kinnear. It’s getting mixed reviews, with a few very poor ones in there. Probably best avoided!
Fire with fire looks truly awful. Truly, truly awful. There’s lots of one star reviews knocking around, if you want to giggle at some of them. I think critics secretly love movies like this, as they get to sharpen their pencils! Bruce Willis is involved with it and he really can’t be that hard up for cash, can he?
Oz: The great and powerful – Sam Rami is back in the saddle, in his first movie since ‘Drag me to Hell’. I think this is a step in the other direction! It’s Sam, so it’s going to be worth watching, even if it is aimed at kids. Steal a local kid and bring them to it, and say the Workhorse gave you permission!
Robot and Frank – This is another one of those heart warming movies about old age, but it stars Frank Langella and Susan Saradon, so that’s reason enough for me. It’s getting average reviews in most quarters, but looks well watchable.
I’m not acknowledging the existence of Parker or The Guilt trip, but they do exist. I can assure you of that.
