Art – Sidney Nolan exhibition is at the other IMMA; Kilmainham. I made it to the show over the Chrismas, and was hugely impressed. It closes on the 27th of Jan, so get there to see this mix of great landscape art combined with the bizarre story of Ned Kelly. Alice Maher‘s show at IMMA (Earlsfort Terrace) is really impressive also (until Feb 27th), and the Tribal Textiles from Iran continues in the Douglas Hyde. Stepping Into the Light (Group show including Pat Scott) continues at the Hugh Lane.
Private Galleries: Siobhan Hapaska & Stephen McKenna are at the Kerlin (until the 19th Jam). The Winter show (Group show until Jan 26th) is at the Taylor Gallery. Hibernation (Group show) is at the Oliver Sears and finishes on the 11th!
Theatre – The Dead is running the Abbey until the 19th, our review is here .They also have the interesting sounding 24 hour plays on the 13th of Jan, which is billed as “24 actors, 6 Writers, 6 Directors” with a bunch of new plays written in 24 hours. Cousin Rachel is at the Gate until Jan 19th. First Fortnight festival continues until the 12th. His week it’s ‘Silent’ in Smock Alley (10-12th), which comes recommended, see our review here.
The Theatre machine turns you on runs at the Project Arts Centre, and sounds like it could be fun! “THEATREclub will produce 24 new theatre pieces in a mini revolution at Project Arts Centre”.
Movies – Tarantino Unchained is a Tarantino retrospective, which starts at the Lighthouse with a chance to see Pulp Fiction on the big screen! A Roman Polanski Season continues at the IFI, with Chinatown running for the next week! Part 2 of their Genius of Hitchcock season kicks off with Sabotage and the Lady vanishes. Casablanca is a free event at the Workmans Club on Tuesday.
Gigs – Gigs are so bad this week that I’m including Gary Barlow and Gilbert and Sullivan at the NCH, just to take the bare look off this place! Kendrick Lamar can’t come quickly enough next week! For the best of this week, I’d go for the One to Watch festival in Whelans with the best of Irelands new talents on display. First Fortnight continues to save us in the bleak weeks with the Therapy Sessions on Friday and Le Galaxie and We Cut Corners on Saturday.
