This is always a struggle, when you prefer the support band to the main act! I’ve only gone to a gig on about four occasions to see the support act and amazingly enough one of the last times was with Calexico also. Beirut supported them just after releasing Gulag Orkestar (Olympia theatre ~ 2006), and I wasn’t alone in the crowd that night wanting to see the bands in reverse!

Calexico are great, don’t get me wrong. They may have lost their way a little over recent albums, but as musicians they’re top class, even if Joey Burns doesn’t maake the perfect front man (They miss How Gelb, if you ask me!).

The Dodos 2009 album Visiter was one of my albums of the year, and on both occasions I’ve seen them live, they’ve been fantastic. You have to love those drums…
