The record labels of my youth – Sub Pop, 4AD, Creation Records

I spent the weekend in my family home and at one point I had a random shuffle through a pile of CDs in a box – I pulled out the following three albums:

These are iconic covers for iconic records but what struck me on further examination was the record labels:

Codeine – The White Birch
Label: Sub Pop

Red House Painters – Red House Painters
Label: 4AD

Boo Radleys – Giant Steps
Label: Creation Records

I was a little bowled over that all three of the records came out of three of the great labels of my youth (I also felt just a little nostalgic). It also got me to thinking, do labels matter as much to people now as they did in the past? I’m really not sure they do. Any thoughts? In the meantime, here’s a track from each of these epic records:

  1. Well, 4AD certainly are still as important, as if you have a look here, they still have bands like Tuneyards, Bon Iver, The National, Atlas Sounds etc, they’re still the music I enjoy most today! http://www.4ad.com/

Sub Pop are still pretty good also, with bands such as the Handsome Furs, Fleet Foxes, Iron and Wine, Beachouse.

    Creation are sadly missed.

I think these labels still hold huge power in who we get to hear! I’ll certainly take note of any new band on 4AD, and pay them more attention than if they were on a label that meant nothing to me!

  2. That’s good to hear. It is amazing how some labels just keep coming up with the goods. Gang Gang Dance are on 4AD too I think. I always loved the artwork on 4AD sleeves actually!!

  3. well, if you look at it from the other side, it’s hard not to wonder are we buying into some marketing specialists view of what ‘alternative’ really is! Still, it’s all good music, so it doesn’t really matter.

I think 4AD just have very good talent scouts, and get in there early. They’ve almost always had a very good line up of bands, for the last 20 years anyway!

  4. Hmm it seems like your blog ate my first comment (it was super long) so I
guess I’ll just sum it up what I had written and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog.
I as well am an aspiring blog writer but I’m still new to everything. Do you have any helpful hints for beginner blog writers? I’d certainly
    appreciate it.

  6. We ended up in a lot of trouble with our previous
SEO company, been doing a bit of research on it myself and next time we
are probably going to employ temp staff to sort it
