Movies – 1-07-11 – ‘A Separation’

It’s always fun to see the release of a big nasty blockbuster, as you can see all the reviewers sharpening their pencils to come up with something especially nasty to say about it. Donald Clark in the Irish times wins for my money, as he calls the new Transformer movie in the franchise like a ‘recurrence of a debilitating, infectious disease’. Peter Bradshaw spends most of his time wondering where the word ‘side’ went in the title ‘Transformers, Dark of the moon’.

The shocking thing about the movie is that it stars Johns Turturro, John Malkovich and Frances McDormand, along with monkey boy Shia. I’ll never see it anyway, so I shouldn’t dwell on that too much. I guess they need the money, the same as us all.

It will also be interesting to see how Larry Crowne does, as about ten years ago, this would have had all of Hollywood waiting with bated breath, but now seems like nothing more than an also ran. Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts star in a another movie I hope I’ll never see.

The Conspirator is a movie by Robert Redford, and also looks pretty painful. So what does that leave to go to this week? Ah, hmm… ‘A Seperation’ is an Iranian movie that comes highly recommended, but could you really do it to yourself? It’s sunny, run with it!Rent it on a wet Sunday in November.
