Movies – The Messenger – 17-06-11

A few new releases that might be worth a visit this week, with the Messenger being the one that’ll probably get my €10.50. It’s directed by Oren Moverman, who wrote the nicely odd ‘I’m not there’ Dylan bio pic of sorts. It stars Woody Harrelson, Steve Buscemi and Samantha Morton, so has some pretty good actors in it at least. Woddy is the messenger of the title, who is the man directed to tell people that their loved one has died in the war.

Potiche is a dangerous thing, a french comedy. Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian describes it as ‘Hilarious’, but go at your own risk. I’m not sure the french really do good comedy! It stars Catherine Deneuve which may be reason enough for some people.

Other releases are the Green Latern which no one seems to like (I never read the comics, so I’m not disappointed!), Bad Teacher (Cameron Diaz stars as a… well… you can guess) and Stake land. The last one is about a world where the monsters have taken over. It gets some very good reviews, with the Irish Times saying that “If Terrence Malick ever gets around to making a zombie apocalypse movie, how ever will we distinguish it from Jim Mickle’s film?” Mickle himself seems to have an interesting career, from his IMDB page, he started as an electrician on set, doing other movies as key grip and best boy and other jobs you’re never quite sure what they mean. It’s pretty amazing he made it to director in the end, and is possibly one to watch for the future.

    • I went to it last week! review in last weeks movie folder…”Kaboom is… really badly acted, poorly written, and shot on nasty australian soap like film. Having said that, it’s alright, in a daft kind of way. I hated it for a while in the cinema, and then decided I was just going to run with it, and it’s quite fun when you do.”
