William Basinski is an ambient pioneer who frequently uses tape loops to create dazzling soundscapes. Better known for his Disintegration Loops series where he used old tape loops which had degraded over time. He salvaged the recordings by transferring them to a digital format and as he did so the tapes physically fell apart. The results of that project are staggering.
